About M. G. Lewis
Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775–1818), known as M. G. Lewis, was an English novelist and playwright, best remembered for his Gothic novel The Monk: A Romance (1796), which he wrote at the age of nineteen. The novel’s scandalous content made him instantly famous and earned him the nickname “Monk” Lewis. He was a member of Parliament and a friend of Lord Byron and the Shelleys.
